Michael Chatterton
Senior Director
Michael joined LawDeb in 2010 as a professional independent trustee. Prior to LawDeb Michael was the Head of Settlement Solutions at Watson Wyatt (now Willis Towers Watson) and the CEO of global employee benefits outsourcer Black Mountain.
Michael represents LawDeb on six schemes whose assets range in size from £100 million to £10 billion and also on the industry consolidation vehicle Clara. He is chair on four appointments and sole corporate trustee on one. He previously chaired a large DC scheme for six years.
During 2021 Michael helped develop our Professional Corporate Sole Trustee client proposition including helping add 5 schemes with 21,600 members in total. His commercial experience helps him appreciate and engage with the Company perspective. He applies this knowledge to support stakeholders to deliver the best outcomes by simplifying complexities and applying them practically.
Michael was instrumental in working with Premier Foods to develop and bring to its conclusion the schemes merger restructure, which significantly improved the Group’s pension funding situation and capital structure. This transformational agreement was a segregated merger of all the Group’s pension schemes, which placed all the UK defined benefit schemes under one Trust.
An actuary by training with an MA in Physics from Oxford University, Michael’s aim for LawDeb is to continue developing our position as the pre-eminent pensions governance organisation in the UK. In his spare time, it’s padel tennis, golf, mountain bikes and boats!
What his clients say:
“This is an innovative and ground-breaking initiative to address pension funding that is delivering huge value for the members and for the company. Law Debenture, in particular Michael Chatterton and Alan Baker, have both been instrumental in working with the company to develop this strategy and help bring it to conclusion.” -Duncan Leggett, Premier Foods CFO
